Rufus Rodriguez claimed on Monday, Nov. 21 that the visit of US Vice President Kamala Harris sends a clear signal to China that the US is supporting the Philippines on the matter of maritime disputes at-sea.“We welcome Vice President Kamala Harris. We thank the [US] for supporting our sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in accordance with the International Arbitral Award in July 2016,” he said.
This is consistent with the aspiration of President Marcos to push for a code of conduct in the South China Sea, including the WPS, which China should respect and follow, Rodriguez said. Before her, State Secretary Anthony Blinken was in Manila in August. Blinken said the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty between the US and the Philippines would kick in if a Philippine vessel or plane was attacked in the South China Sea.
