Roger Federer may be tennis royalty but that did not stop the eight-time Wimbledon champion making an almighty faux pas in the Royal Box with Kate Middleton.
While making his entrance into Royal Box to watch women’s third seed Elena Rybakina take on American Shelby Rogers, the eight-time Wimbledon champion appeared to go in for a kiss with the Princess of Wales.
While the Princess and Federer are close friends, the move is not considered protocol when greeting a member of the royal family. Royal protocol dictates that members of the royal family should never be touched unless they offer their own hand in greeting. In Federer's defence, he is a personal friend of the Prince and Princess of Wales and has even taught Prince George how to play tennis. A master at royal engagements, the Princess of Wales is famous for brushing off breaks in royal protocol without offending the other person.
Kate, who serves as royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club and hands out the trophies to the champions, was later spotted engaging Roger's wife Mirka in animated conversation.
