The engine specialist books a string of costs but says its restructuring is starting to show in its underlying performance.
Rolls-Royce has reported a pre-tax loss of £2.9bn for its last financial year after booking a string of charges related to its commercial aircraft operations.
The FTSE 100 company, which makes engines for large civil aircraft, military planes, ships, trains and industry, said it had raised costs associated to problems with its Trent 1000 engines to £790m in the second half of 2018 from £554m. The blade durability issue has forced the company to pay for inspections and repairs to the engines - used to power the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The company said it had also taken a £186m hit on its Trent 900 engine operation following the decision by Airbus to cease production of the A380 superjumbo.The civil aerospace division at Rolls-Royce has faced hundreds of millions of pounds of extra costs because of concerns about engine blade durability
Much of that decline was attributed to a separate announcement that Rolls-Royce had abandoned its bid to power Boeing's planned mid-market aircraft.
