Ronaldo, who begins what is likely to be his last World Cup campaign when Portugal face Ghana on Thursday, also confirmed the news with a statement of his own. “Following talks with Manchester United, we’ve mutually agreed to end our contract,” the striker said.“It feels like the right time to seek a new challenge. I wish Man Utd all the best.”Ronaldo lost his place in the United starting XI this season and only managed one Premier League goal under Ten Hagwith former club Sporting Lisbon, Premier League side Chelsea and a move to MLS side Inter Miami, who are owned by David Beckham and managed by ex-United teammate Phil Neville.
“It’s very sad. He gave so much to Man United, the fans were superb to him and he had a great career there.England legend Stuart Pearce added: “For his sake I’m glad it’s been revolved now before a ball is kicked for him [at the World Cup].“The last thing I wanted for football was a long drawn out legal battle between the two parties.
“I think he should have left in the summer. I hope he is remembered for the good things he has done for United and not the last couple of months.”
