Some spectacular late order batting from 22-year-old spinner Todd Murphy has allowed Australia to scramble back on level terms with England. Ashes2023

Three mighty sixes from tailender Todd Murphy off express England paceman Mark Wood has allowed Australia to snatch the lead against England during a fluctuating second day of the fifth and final Test at the Oval.

It will take an enormous bowling effort for Australia to stay in the match given they have to bat last, but at least they are back on parity, something which appeared most unlikely for much of the day, when they lost 6/94 to be 7/185, still 98 behind England and with the second new ball not far away.

They appeared to have the match under more control than most of their teammates when Smith charged Chris Woakes and mistimed an ambitious drive over mid-off. Smith then tried to heave a slower ball over midwicket and top-edged it over wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, who ran back to take the catch.
