Rory McIlroy was vocal about LIV golfers who missed out on the Paris Olympics - but the Northern Irishman was not always sold on the idea of competing at the Games
Rory McIlroy had a change of heart regarding the Olympic Games, now valuing the competition highly after previously prioritising major championships.
McIlroy had a shift in perspective from his previous stance that a major victory held higher esteem in his books. Ahead of the Rio Olympics in 2016, which he snubbed playing in, he said: "I never dreamed of competing in the Olympics or winning an Olympic medal. So in my mind, a major will always be more important."
McIlroy then went one further showing how much the Olympics means to him by rubbing salt in the wounds of the LIV Golf players who failed to qualify, of which there were several key figures like Bryson DeChambeau. "If you want to qualify for the Olympics, you knew what you had to do," he vented. Seven of those who had controversially switched to LIV Golf, including Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann managed to secure their spots in the Olympic tournament in Paris, although big names such as DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, and Sergio Garcia were out of contention.
