McIlroy missed the cut at The Open for just the third time in his career, as the Northern Irishman endured a torrid time at Royal Troon throughout the week
Rory McIlroy has suffered a disappointing exit from The Open Championship, missing the cut for only the third time in his career after one of his worst performances at the final major of the year.
McIlroy's day got off to a rocky start as challenging conditions along the Scottish coastline proved too much for him. His first bogey came at the third hole, but it was the events of the next hole that signalled the beginning of the end for the four-time major champion. A miscalculated chip shot landed in a green-side bunker, but he managed to give himself a chance to save an up-and-down after playing his shot from the sand to five-feet. However, reminiscent of his troubles at Pinehurst No.2 in June, McIlroy missed a short putt before finally ending with a triple-bogey eight.
