McIlroy was fuming with Patrick Cantlay's caddie and it appears tensions spilled over into the parking lot.

Rory McIlroy was seen getting into a furious altercation in the parking lot at the Ryder Cup in Rome - and had to be held back by teammate Shane Lowry.

Team Europe ended Saturday with their five-point lead from Day One intact but only after Team USA surged to a 3-1 victory in the afternoon Fourballs to keep their hopes of a dramatic comeback alive. McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick lost the final match by a single hole to Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark which dampened the European spirits somewhat.

McIlroy was seen getting into it after that one with Joe LaCarver, Cantlay's caddie, and reports suggested he felt the celebrations after Cantlay landed the final hole were too exuberant. His partner Fitzpatrick calmed things down but they only got as far as the car park before tensions flared again. A clip shared widely on social media shows McIlroy pointing the finger at someone off camera, with broadcaster Jim 'Bones' Mackay playing peacekeeper.

McIlroy is then escorted away and into the car by another teammate Lowry, who re-emerges to speak with Mackay.
