Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy have spent their careers as central characters in modern professional golf, writes BFQuinn. For either to win a major — in their own ways, a desperately needed major — at this U.S. Open, in Hollywood? It’s too much.
LOS ANGELES — For a few minutes Saturday afternoon, it was Rickie and Rory, alone, and together, all over again.
For either to win a major championship — in their own ways, a desperately needed, painfully long-awaited major championship — at this U.S. Open, in Hollywood? It’s too much. It’s a script that wouldn’t pass the sniff test in any studio. Too easy, too cheesy. We would start with Fowler and McIlroy at the 2007 Walker Cup at Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, not far from McIlroy’s hometown. Baggy shirts. Mid-aught hair spraying out from ill-fitting hats. Some pimples.
Now, present day. Both Rickie and Rory are in LA, arriving at a Sunday that could be a transformative moment in each guy’s life. On Father’s Day, no less. But golf, perhaps our most individual sport, has a way of assuring that protagonists meet. So, yes, this is very real.McIlroy has played in 32 majors since winning back-to-back in 2014. He’s posted 19 top-10 finishes, always so tantalizingly close, a generational talent going unfulfilled.
