Rory McIlroy has fallen agonisingly short of breaking a 10-year drought in golf majors, dropping a shot on the 72nd hole to let the 2024 US Open title slip away to Bryson DeChambeau on a thrilling Sunday at Pinehurst. McIlroy cut a dejected figure watching on from the clubhouse as DeChambeau erupted in celebration with a raucous crowd that he had roused all week and peaked after the championship-winning putt.
Playing in back-to-back groups, the pair traded faults in the final four holes as McIlroy missed two easy par putts, including a four-footer on 18, and hit three bogeys to finish at five under par. After bogeying 15, DeChambeau missed golden opportunities for birdes at 16 and 17 before a terrible drive off the tee at 18 put him in danger of needing to go to a playoff hole to win it.
