A northern NSW health chief says it 'hurts to the bone' that doctors are being paid to fly in and work in local hospitals only to cancel operations due to a lack of available beds.

"Last week our fly-in surgeon missed out on three or four joint surgeries that we should have done, but didn't have the bed space.Northern NSW Local Health District chief executive Wayne Jones said surgeons, including those flying in to regional hospitals to help reduce elective surgery waitlists, were at times unable to operate."The reality is at times you can't avoid that.Health Infrastructure NSW is developing a master plan for the $264m hospital redevelopment.
