One thing we know about the public and the spotlight is that they love dominance. Recognition might be slow to arrive, but inevitably it pulls up. Individual or team, male or female, young or old — doesn’t matter. Greatness is like a magnet. We saw it in women’s golf in 1978, when Nancy Lopez won five consecutive tournaments and nine overall while being named LPGA Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year.
She could have folded at Augusta National, where she squandered a five-stroke lead on Saturday. Instead, he composed herself and defeated Jenny Bae in a playoff. This weekend, she found herself struggling on Sunday after going bogey-free the previous day to take a two-shot lead. Twice she finished a hole over par, including an offline putt on 18 that would have won in regulation.
“I honestly didn’t even expect to make the cut, and the reason why I say this is because I don’t think about my expectations a lot,” she said. “I think about playing the golf course. I think about trying to shoot the best score that I can.
