The question in the wake of Carlos Correa’s six-year, $200 million deal with the Twins is whether his agent, Scott Boras, could have better protected his client. Ken_Rosenthal discussed the situation with a number of agents across the industry.

Under the circumstances, then, Boras might have viewed the exit physical the Twins conducted on Correa at the end of the season as sufficient, and an independent consultation as unnecessary. The Twins’ physical turned up no issues. Such exams, however, are often limited to areas of concern that arose during a player’s regular-season visits to the trainer’s room. Correa never visited the trainer’s room because of his ankle, even after a hard slide into second base on Sept.
The Giants, after agreeing with Correa on a contract more than four times as long, had to consider a different calculus.with Correa broke on Dec. 13. While the source was not identified, deals involving Boras clients often become public quickly. Many agents resist releasing such information, fearing that if issues in a player’s physical quash the agreement, his standing in the open market will be damaged.
The Giants’ postponement of an introductory news conference for Correa in San Francisco was the first indication something was amiss. Any extended delay might have aroused suspicion and produced the same outcome, but players often fail physicals without anyone knowing. In a perfect world, perhaps, Boras would have worked out a restructured deal with the Giants, rather than go back into the open market.
Such analysis, however, assumes the Giants were willing to negotiate downward. It is not clear that was the case. The Giants said they wanted more time to examine Correa’s medical records. Boras dismissed their concerns as “speculative dynamics.
