Rosie Jones (josierones) spoke to Metro about her Channel 4 documentary exploring the online abuse people with disabilities face. 'I don’t want to swallow all of this hate and abuse because I swallow enough disability hate that then becomes self-hate.'
The 33-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, is fronting controversially titled programme Am I A R****d? for which she hasThe feature-length film follows Rosie speaking to people who have faced similar experiences, as well as seeking answers over why social media platforms allow abusive speech to filter through.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk about her experience reading through those abusive messages for the documentary, Rosie shared: ‘I will open up Twitter and see people abuse me everyday, I will walk down the street and have people shout ableist slurs at me, I will order an Uber and the driver will see me and assume I’m drunk and drive away, and these were always daily minute forms of ableism that ended up swallowing how I felt about myself.
Talking about wanting to create the documentary, she continued: ‘I’m passionate about creating a film documentary that wasn’t funny, that wasn’t making fun of myself or my own disability, it really showed what it’s like to live in the UK as a disabled person.’At one point in the emotional documentary, Rosie reads out several horrific, abusive messages sent to her
Rosie went on to discuss why she was so passionate about telling her story now, at this point in her career and after Covid lockdowns, in which she pointed out how difficult it was being ‘ignored’ by the government.
