Michael O'Neill hopes to be able to call upon the young attacker when his troops arrive at Hampden next week.
Ross McCausland has returned to Rangers for treatment but Northern Ireland hope he WILL be fit to face Scotland next week.
The youngster has burst onto the scene under Philippe Clement but has been struggling with injury in recent weeks. He's been used sparingly with a one minute cameo in the Europa League clash with Benfica in Lisbon before being an unused sub in the Ibrox return as his side exited the competition a week later.
He wasn't in domestic action for Rangers this weekend after their clash with Dundee was postponed. The Ibrox men were left angered by the late call off after the Dens Park surface was checked with two pitch inspections before a final decision was made. The SPFL have since confirmed that they will launch a probe into the call-off.
But Michael O'Neill has confirmed McCausland will not face Romania and will only be available for the short trip to Hampden to face Scotland should his treatment at Rangers all go according to plan. His international team-mate Jamal Lewis is in a similar position. Giving an update on his Northern Ireland squad ahead of the away friendly double-header, he said: “Both Ross and Jamal have gone back to their clubs for treatment, but hopefully they will join up with us when we arrive in Scotland for the second game."
