The service was praised in several different categories after the inspection
A birth centre has been awarded with a ‘Good’ rating following a national maternity inspection programme.
“The service controlled infection risk well. Staff assessed risks to women, acted on them and kept good care records. They managed medicines well. The service managed safety incidents well and learned lessons from them.” It was noted that although the service provided mandatory comprehensive training in key skills to all staff and made sure everyone completed it, not all staff had completed level three safeguarding adults training. The report praised staff for controlling infection risk well and detailed how staff used equipment and control measures to protect women, themselves and others from infection.
There is one birthing room with a pool and ante and postnatal clinics are also provided. It provides maternity services to women in the Blackburn, Burnley, Pendle, Rossendale, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley areas. The report also states: “Women could not always access birth choices and options to give birth in Rossendale.
The inspection team says the trust should ensure all staff complete level three safeguarding adults and children training, in order to protect women from abuse and improper treatment. They also suggested that the service should consider developing a local vision and strategy for the birth centre and should continue working with staff to increase competence in using the electronic care record system.
