R-rated comedy hides a sensitive central theme about how a Texas widow and her teenage son struggle to process their grief and anger
Ever since its off off Broadway debut in 2011, Robert Askins' comedy 'Hand to God' has been known as a demonic puppet comedy so raunchy it makes 'Avenue Q' seem like kid's stuff. But beyond the dozens of F-bombs and eye-popping, marathon sex scene between two hand puppets, 'Hand to God' hides a warm and soft center. The 90-minute play is not really about a puppet possessed by the devil.
Rebecca Crigler makes an impressive San Diego acting debut as Margery, a distracted and despairing widow making one bad choice after another. Adam Daniel does impressive double-duty comedy work as both Jason and Tyrone, often carrying on both sides of the characters' arguments in different voices. Dave Rivas brings a need desperation to Pastor Greg, who has a hilarious scene attempting to court the completely disinterested Marjery.
