During a controversial appearance that created friction within the National Association of Black Journalists, Trump came to show Black voters why they should support him. And truly showed them why no one should.
Because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, what I was hearing. What I was seeing in person. What I was hearing live, unfiltered, and unhinged.Donald Trump shows us who he is every time he speaks, so what happened Wednesday afternoon inside a packed ballroom in Chicago was no surprise. Yet it was.
Since 1976, we’ve issued invitations to the nominees of each political party to be questioned by our journalists during presidential election seasons. During off years, the president is invited to address and take questions from the body. Sometimes they come; sometimes they do not. Throughout this campaign, he’s been especially condescending to Black people, claiming Blacks identify with him because he’s a felon, claiming migrants are taking “Black jobs,” all while claiming to have made inroads with Black voters .Frankly, I was surprised he accepted. Then, I was not. Suddenly, with Vice President Kamala Harris his presumptive Democratic opponent, polls showed the presidential race was not the cakewalk Republicans expected. It’s ascared.
For him – because he was not playing to his base at some rally, but sitting before a room of journalists doing what we are called to do. A room of Black journalists, which seemed to surprise him at one juncture.Seeing him spew hate and lies on news clips is one thing. You can turn away, flip the switch. You can scroll through talking dog videos.
Like when he tripled down on migrants taking “Black and Hispanic jobs”. “People in this room and people outside of this room are going to be losing their jobs to people that have come into this country illegally. The first group of people affected are the Black population and Kamala is allowing it to happen.”
