Christmas Day for the Royal Family is a day packed full of unique traditions, but it isn't just a time for roast turkey, mince pies and carols as it also sees one of the King 's closest relatives celebrate her birthday. She is a treasured member of the monarch’s inner circle and trusted friend who was born in Belgravia on Christmas Day in 1936 as the second child of the Duke and Duchess of Kent.

The Princess is now the eldest female member of the Royal Family, and the second eldest overall behind her brother, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. Princess Alexandra Helen Elizabeth Olga Christabel of Kent was born on December 25, 1936 to Prince George, Duke of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. The princess was born on Christmas Day like her aunt, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester. As a mark of being born on the special day, they were both given the middle name of Christabel. Alexandra was the second of three children for the Duke and Duchess of Kent. Her older brother Prince Edward, Duke of Kent was born in 1935 and her younger brother Prince Michael of Kent completed the trio in 1942. While she was born in London, the princess spent the large majority of her childhood at the family’s country home of Coppins in Buckinghamshire. She was also the first princess to attend boarding school. Alexandra was a student at Heathfield School in Windsor before travelling to study in Paris. Her father, Prince George, Duke of Kent died in a plane crash in Scotland on August 25, 1942 while serving in the RAF. At the time of his death, his youngest son Prince Michael was just just over a month old. Following his death, Alexandra focused on her studies and even trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital. On April 24, 1963, the princess married Angus James Bruce Ogilvy at Westminster Abbey.
