Flight nurse Karen Barlow has been with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Dubbo since its inception. Her passion for the service has rubbed off on her family, with her brother joining as a pilot.

A friend handed her a job ad for a flight nurse at the newly established Royal Flying Doctor Service base in Dubbo .

At first the RFDS focused on inter-hospital transfers, but it quickly expanded to include emergency flights and non-emergency patient transport as the needs of western NSW grew. With an ambulance unable to make the four-hour journey quickly enough, the Maxwells were one of the first families to turn to the RFDS.Sharleen said throughout the flight, the RFDS flight nurse provided crucial support and reassurance.

The Maxwells later moved to Lismore in the Northern Rivers, and said the availability of medical help in remote areas was often overlooked."For people in the far west, if it rains, people might not be able to get through to hospital because of road closures or simply make the four-hour drive to Dubbo, that's what it's like for people who really depend on the RFDS.
