Arran Huthwaite was addicted to drugs before the robbery in Beeston
A former Royal Marine, who served his country for 10 years, found himself homeless and addicted to drugs before he robbed a shop with a screwdriver. Nottingham Crown Court heard how Arran Huthwaite was living in a tent when he decided to walk into the Beeston shop, produce the weapon and threaten the person behind the counter.
“Many robberies involve the production of a knife and this involved the production of a small-bladed screwdriver. For 10 years you were a Royal Marine and saw active service where no doubt you saw things that have never left you. “By the time this offence took place, you had been living for two weeks in a tent and desperate to obtain money for drugs you committed this offence. That history demonstrates you are someone who requires and deserves help and many people do not have that distinction.
She said the victim was behind the till and was confronted by Huthwaite who was armed with what she thought was “a sharpened metal stick” which turned out to be a screwdriver. The prosecutor said: “She handed over a quantity of cash after being threatened and the man fled from the scene.”
