Royal Navy told to make submarine doors bigger to fit fatter sailors
Fighter plane ejector seats are having to be modified because RAF pilots have become bigger in recent years.
Britain’s obesity crisis is hitting the military and now a Tory peer has suggested submarine escape hatches may also need to be made bigger. The issue of overweight military personnel was highlighted by Lord McColl, who is also a consultant surgeon.Speaking in the House of Lords, he said: ‘By far and away the most serious eating disorder is the obesity epidemic which is now impinging upon the armed forces.‘We may have to enlarge the escape hatches of submarines to allow [people to get out].’
According to the Telegraph, new fighter jets have been fitted with super-boosted ejector seats capable of throwing a person weighing nearly 18 stone. An RAF survey last year found 4,272 airmen and women classed as clinically obese. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said that fitness standards in the Royal Navy had been maintained and there was no need, or plan, to increase the size of hatches on submarines as a result of personnel issues.
