A quarter of a million spectators will flock on to the famous Ayrshire links at this summer’s Major.
The R&A have announced this year’s Championship in Ayrshire is set to be the third-highest attended ever. Royal Troon 's numbers in July will be up more than 70,000 from the last staging of The Open at the venue eight years ago.
In terms of figures, it will sit behind only the 290,000 at St Andrews in 2022 and the 261,000 at Hoylake last year. R&A director of communications Mike Woodcock confirmed: "It is a big increase and I think there’s been a huge amount done to try and make sure that the number we bring in is what the golf course can accommodate. There is a lot of space out there and we’ve done a lot of work on the throughflow, pathways, spectator areas, etc.
“There’s been a lot of work done in the on-course areas to ensure that the fans can get around enjoy good viewing areas. I think the viewing decks, grandstand seatings and so on that we’ve put in can accommodate it. I think you’ve seen at recent venues that the championship attendance has been increasing and, by and large, it has worked very well and it should be a great week here and a great atmosphere.
Meanwhile, tournament chiefs have announced the course will have both the longest and the shortest holes in the history of The Open. The par-five sixth can play as long as 623 yards, while the signature par-three Postage Stamp, the eighth, can play at just 99 yards with tee and pin options.
