Patrick Kielty's New Year's Eve special on the Late Late Show sparked mixed reactions from viewers, with some praising the musical guests and interviews while others criticized the lineup and the host's pacing.
RTE viewers were divided by the Late Late Show New Year's Eve special, which saw host Patrick Kielty celebrate the year's end with celebrations from a studio packed with special guests and performers. Patrick celebrated the end of 2024 by inviting esteemed Irish Olympic heroes Sharlene Mawdsley, Mona McSharry and Orla Comerford, as well as actor and comedian Fred Cooke, alongside a slew of musical guests .
Some comparisons were made to Jools Holland's Hootenanny as Kielty played host to the RTE Concert Orchestra, The Undertones, Picture This, James Blunt and more over the night, dazzling viewers at home. However, viewers were left divided by the New Year bonanza, with some loving the interviews and the musical guests, while others were left livid at the selection. One impressed viewer penned: 'Loving the Patrick Kielty Jools Holland style New Year's party. Really good'. Another agreed: 'For the first time in memory, RTE finally has a decent New Year 2025.' A third fan simply said: 'Great Late Late Show tonight. Happy New Year.' More were impressed by the musical selection over the night, with one writing: 'First time seeing and hearing Cian Ducrot...what a voice! What a performer!' Although the musical performances and guests seemed to rouse some viewers, others were less than enthralled at the line-up over the night. A disgruntled tele-watcher fumed: 'As a Manchester United fan, I'm used to references to 'a new low' on a regular basis but nothing compares to this Late Late Show New Year's Eve special. It's utterly horrific. Makes me want to hope for the end of the world inside the next half hour.' Another agreed: 'I can not watch the Late Late Show anymore Patrick bores me stupid he isn't a host he is so boring. It's sad I grew up loving it but he has ruined it.' A third questioned the speed in which Kielty ran through the interviews: 'Kielty clearly looking to get into Guinness Book of Records for fastest and most empty interviews of 2024
