Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has agreed a deal in principle to become Man United's new manager
Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim following the sacking of Erik ten Hag.
He is one of the most highly-rated managers in European football and coaxing him to Old Trafford would be something of a coup for Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, particularly given the obvious links to Manchester City after Amorim’s current technical director at Sporting, Hugo Viana, agreed to move to the Etihad next year.
The first task is to climb the table and maximise the potential of an immediate fixture list that includes several home matches and several fixtures against bottom half sides. United also need to find victories in the Europa League having drawn all three of their group games so far. Going out at the first hurdle is unthinkable and Amorim must ensure United are at least involved in the play-offs come the new year.
Amorim could do with getting a tune out of both to ensure United are able to turn chances into goals. It wasn’t too long ago that Marcus Rashford was enjoying the season of his career yet he regressed last term - though the early signs this season have been promising. Restoring confidence up top feels like a big priority.
