A spokesman for the US Trade Representative said the comments about the US throwing 'some of its allies under a bus' were 'very different' to representations the Australian government has been making to the Biden Administration.

In a January interview with Bloomberg TV, Mr Rudd made pointed comments about America's economic strategy in Asia saying,"You cannot continue to assume that there'll be collective solidarity on security questions but, on the economy, the United States is happy to throw some of its allies under a bus.

In a statement provided to Sky News the spokesman said, “We are proud to have Australia as a member of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, which collectively comprises 40 per cent of global GDP and represents a foundational piece of the Biden Administration’s economic engagement in the region. We had a very productive negotiating round in Brisbane in December and we appreciate Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for hosting us.

In the December 18 piece, Lighthizer quotes Mr Rudd as a"China expert" who has classified China's protectionist policies as “decoupling with Chinese characteristics”. "This raises several interesting questions. 1. If one trillion dollars in annual trade/deficit wealth transfer isn't enough to buy friends in the region, how much is? Two trillion? Three trillion?"
