Música Is "95%" True To Rudy Mancuso's Life As with many up-and-coming filmmakers, Mancuso ultimately turned to his own life experience to craft Música's story. Though acknowledging that some moments are "exaggerated and hyperbolized" for entertainment, he found much to resonate with and wanted to share on screen:
One such location that also led to some "creative liberties" being taken with his life story was the fish market, where he and Mendes' Isabella have their meet-cute moment as he's slapped in the face by a fish. Mancuso found the bit as not only a moment to honor one of his childhood stomping grounds, but also to subvert genre expectations:
There's so much light to be shined on it, and so much more to be understood, it's ongoing. But yeah, for me, there was a clear correlation between my type of synesthesia and music, and the way I interpret sounds, and the way I try to turn sounds into music involuntarily — sometimes, obsessively.
Maria Mancuso: Yeah, but he did a lot of features. But he'd always say, "You gotta be more like yourself, mom." I'm like, "Oh, that's great." Because every time you got the script, it was scary, right? "All these pages here, we're gonna do them." But then, when I looked at the script, I'd say, "Hey, this is me talking to Rudy." All of my lines were easy. It was amazing, I loved to do it.
Camila Mendes: So, we play both of Rudy's love interests. One old, one new. I play Isabella. She works at the fish market, and Rudy stumbles into the fish market and sets his eyes on her. And Fran plays... Rudy Mancuso: And I think that's really what both women represent — actually, all three women represent — are different versions of Rudy's future when, ultimately, the only person who can make that decision is himself.
Francesca Reale: If you put it in the perspective of like a game, like one of those games where you're going in a circle, and everyone just has to have an answer, it felt a lot less anxiety-inducing, but it was definitely one of the most challenging things I've ever had to do as a very non-musical person.
We worked with Melissa Kent, who was our editor, and she had to deal with my bulls--t for months. Because every frame, every beat, and every sound needs to be perfectly syncopated, or it doesn't work. Another interesting member of the movie's cast is actually not a human, but rather the puppet Diego, one of the more famous characters from Mancuso's Awkward Puppets YouTube channel. In the movie, he serves as "Rudy's unfiltered consciousness", resulting in some surreal and uniquely funny musical numbers — which Mancuso teases the soundtrack will feature more of.
Rudy Mancuso: Honestly, yes. We got very close during the pandemic. Now he's like family, him and Barbara and his whole family. We live very close to each other, and for a few months, we hung out every single day. One day he was just like, "Hey, I'm making this movie. It's called The Flash. Do you want to be in it for a little bit?" And I was like, "Alright. Do you want to be in my movie for a little bit?" And he was like, "Alright.
