Keven Appo, a rugby player for the Bradford Bulls, fled the UK to Dubai and then Papua New Guinea just hours after being charged with rape and other offenses. An extradition process is now underway.
Sacked Bradford Bulls rugby player Keven Appo fled the UK just five hours after being charged with rape, a court heard. The rugby league star was charged with rape, sexual assault and two counts of assault, the BBC reports. The 25-year-old was given conditional bail at 4pm on November 26 but at 8.40pm on the same evening he was heading out the country to Dubai, catching another flight to his native Papua New Guinea.
Prosecutor Fiona Newcombe told the court an extradition process was now underway. Mr Appo had been due to appear for a hearing at the court on Monday, January 6, morning. Ms Newcombe told the court the defendant had given his house and car keys to the manager of the rugby club. She said authorities would now work with police in Papua New Guinea to extradite him. Mr Appo, of Halifax, was sacked by Bradford Bulls after he was charged with the offences. In a statement the club said they had 'cancelled Keven Appo's playing contract'. The Rugby League outfit signed Sheffield Eagles back-rower Bayley Liu to replace Mr Appo
