Tackling the concussion issue: Lincolnshire rugby responds to the latest law changes.

In the heart of Lincolnshire, four seasoned coaches and a local referee delve deep into the recent changes in community rugby's tackle laws.

Martin Roberts played for over 10 years for Gainsborough and a club in North Wales before retiring in 2019. Now the Gainsborough Ladies head coach, he welcomes the move having also experienced the effects of concussion during his days as a player. “Previously all the onus was on the tackler. In the past you’d tell someone to dip their shoulder going into contact.

“Initially I was concerned, but after attending the tackle height clinics from the RFU, and becoming a tackle height champion, I am a lot more confident we can do this as a club. For the welfare of the players, it is a good thing. He added: “If we are making a law change, I want everyone on the same page, juniors, seniors and top end.

“It’s not a bad thing if people tackle lower, but the problem is they’ve left it to inexperienced or lower level referees to deliver this and there is a lot of variety in how it’s being interpreted.” Along with other local coaches, Coates acknowledged that there could be confusion with the community game having different laws to professional rugby.
