A new emissions rule has come into force in England, but things are slightly different in Scotland.

As new rules come into force in England for anyone who burn logs to stay warm, households may be wondering if the same applies to Scotland.

The new rule is being implemented under the English government's 25 year environmental plan and the Scottish government released the Cleaner Air Scotland Strategy 2 in 2021. As of now, Scotland's regulations do not specify how much smoke can be emitted, but there are still rules to follow that could result in fines if broken.

If you own a wood burning stove which was installed before January 2022, you do not have to do anything about it, even if it does not meet these new standards. This is because the legislation does not relate to appliances installed prior to January of that year.
