Following the assassination of top Russian general Igor Kirillov, Russian authorities swiftly arrested a suspect, claiming he acted on instructions from Ukraine's intelligence service. The suspect's confession video, released by the FSB, raises questions due to his demeanor and apparent injuries. Russia is emphasizing the perpetrators and labeling Kyiv as 'terrorists' to maintain public support for the war in Ukraine.
By Ivor Bennett, Moscow correspondentThe response from Russia’s authorities to yesterday's assassination of top general Igor Kirillov has been swift and robust - a clear attempt to show they're on top of things. They've made an arrest, know who did it and are vowing to report the hit to the UN.As if to underline how firmly they have matters under control, the FSB shared a video of what they say is the suspect's confession. It's rather odd, to put it mildly.
There also appear to be bruises on his forehead and face.It raises many questions, as does the attack. One would think the authorities would be asking how a member of Russia's military top brass could be blown up on their own doorstep. But there's no talk of mistakes or lapses in security. The Kremlin doesn't want the public to panic. So the official line is focusing on the perpetrators, with the Kremlin describing Kyiv as 'terrorists'.
