The drills are to practice deployment of tactical nuclear weapons, included obtaining special training ammunition for the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile system – which has a range of up to 310 miles . “The crews of navy ships involved in the training will equip sea-based cruise missiles with special mock warheads and enter designated patrol areas.”
The Leningrad military district stretches from the border with Norway in the north down to Belarus, and includes the Northern Fleet and the exclave of Kaliningrad which sits on the Baltic Sea between Lithuania and Poland.The move comes as Mr Putin attempts to expand the location of his routine military drills to nearer the Ukrainian border after Russia
Mr Putin last week claimed Russia’s tactical nuclear weapons contained 70-75 kilotons of explosive power – around five times the size of the US nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima in August 1945, while he also hinted at possibly changing Russia’s nuclear doctrine, which sets out the conditions under which such weapons could be used.
It comes as Mykola Oleshchuk, a Ukrainian Air Force Commander said on Telegram that the country had shot down five out of six missiles and all 24 drones launched during Russia’s overnight attack early on Wednesday.
