Russia is emptying libraries and schools of Ukrainian books, according to an intelligence assessment from Kyiv
Last September, CNR said it had received evidence that libraries in the city of Melitopol, to the east of, had been emptied of Ukrainian language texts, with a particular focus on children’s books. Similar raids were claimed to have been repeated last month in the wider Melitopol area.
In the city of Vovchansk, in north-eastern Ukraine, a Russian-born librarian last year told of hiding Ukrainian history books from Moscow troops, while in nearby Kupyansk teachers spoke of Ukrainian textbooks and teaching materials being seized and destroyed in situ before being replaced with books in Russian.Russian destruction of cultural and educational artefacts
and materials, describing looting of museums and libraries as “a violation of Ukrainians’ right to self-determination”. Alexandra Xanthaki, a UN special rapporteur on cultural rights, said: “Attempts against academic and artistic freedoms, linguistic rights, falsification and distortion of historical facts… result in further degeneration and fueling of open conflict.”
Ukrainian sources said many of the seizures seemed to have been co-ordinated by Russian military police with a particular focus on texts describing recent history in Ukraine, including the Maidan pro-democracy protests in 2014, and literature about the Holodomor, a man-made famine in 1933 which killed millions of Ukrainians.
