A Russian court has sentenced Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva to six-and-a-half years in prison for allegedly spreading false information about the Russian military, the second U.S. journalist convicted this year by Russian officials amid a crackdown on press freedom.

Russia accused Gershkovich and his employer, the Wall Street Journal, of gathering information on a Russian military facility for the CIA while on a reporting assignment last year, though Russian officials did not release public evidence. The newspaper called Gerhskovich’s conviction a “sham trial” and the State Department declared Gershkovich as “wrongfully detained,” also criticizing the proceedings as a “sham.
