Russian forces have made good on Putin's threats to begin tactical nuclear weapon training near the Ukrainian border.

Russian forces have begun tactical nuclear weapon exercises near the Ukrainian border, various news outlets report. Ordered by Russian Premier Vladimir Putin, the drills are designed to simulate the preparation and potential use of the weapon systems.

According to Russia’s defense ministry, the tactical nuclear weapons drills order comes in the wake of “threats” from the West reaching “unprecedented levels.” The Russian defense ministry released footage on Tuesday showing trucks transporting missiles to an unknown field. In it, the launch systems had been prepared, and troops at an airfield were preparing a bomber to carry a nuclear warhead.

The ministry stated that it was the initial phase of the drills, which included practicing loading launch vehicles, driving to launch sites, and loading planes with hypersonic Kinzhal missiles. According to the two countries, Belarus, where Russia deployed tactical nuclear weapons last year, will also be involved.
