UN general assembly debates motion calling for unconditional withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine on anniversary of war
While the measure was not as tough as Ukraine had pushed for, Kyiv hoped that a large majority of UN states would back the non-binding resolution to demonstrate it has the support of the global community.Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the resolution calls on member states to support diplomacy and a comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine.
It reaffirms the UN’s “commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine” and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities.“immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine.” With the new resolution, Kyiv hopes to garner the support of at least as many countries as it did in October, when 143 countries voted to condemn Russia’s declared annexation of several Ukrainian territories.Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told delegates that they faced a “decisive moment.”
More than 80 countries are scheduled to address the general assembly, which is expected to vote on the draft resolution on Ukraine on Thursday or Friday.
