Ukrainian officials have denied claims from Wagner Group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin that Russian forces control ‘80%’ of Bakhmut.

Though Bakhmut isn’t much of a strategic hub, the eastern midsize mining city has become one of the most symbolic in the year-long war.

‘In Bakhmut, the larger part, more than 80% is now under our control, including the whole administrative centre, factories, warehouses, the administration of the city,’ he said. Not quite, said Serhii Cherevatyi, a spokesperson for the eastern grouping of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.‘I’ve just been in touch with the commander of one of the brigades that are defending the city.

‘Prigozhin needs to show at least some victory in the city, which they have been trying to capture for nine months in a row, so he makes such statements,’ Cherevatyi added.Wagner is closely aligned to the Kremlin into Bakhmut to drag out the fight.‘We handed over the flanks to the Ministry of Defence. Units of the Ministry of Defence, including the airborne troops, have today taken over both the right and left flanks,’ he said.
