The operation was orchestrated by Jan Marsalek, an Austrian national, alongside Bulgarian national Orlin Roussev. The court heard that the duo discussed kidnapping and even assassinating the journalist, Kirill Grozev, who was a prominent dissident.
The defendants also plotted to capture surveillance images of Grozev with other people of interest to Russia, as part of their six-year espionage campaign. Additionally, the trial involves other suspects Katrin Ivanova and Tihomir Ivanov Ivanchev, who were allegedly part of a UK-based spy network targeting dissidents and investigative journalists
