Rutgers football lost a key starter for the rest of the season due to injury.
Rutgers linebacker Tyreem Powell on the sideline after he was disqualified from the game for a targeting penalty during the first half against Michigan State, Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023 in Piscataway, N.J.had largely avoided the injury bug as it got off to its best start in a decade, but during their bye week, the“Unfortunately, Tyreem’s hand is going to need surgery, so he’s going to be out for a while,” Schiano said. “Probably the remainder of the season.
“Tyreem was playing at a very, very high level, so he’ll be a very tough player to put replace,” Schiano said. “Thank goodness we have some depth. But now that depth will be tested — not only the immediate depth but the young guys behind them. But it’s somebody’s opportunity now. They need to step up and take advantage of it. Tyreem will heal up and he’ll be well again, I’m confident of that. It’s just a shame it happened to him.”. He left the game late in the third quarter and did not return.
“It’s definitely disappointing to know that we’re losing him for the season because he’s such a vocal part of our defense,” running back Kyle Monangai said. “I know it’s hard for him as well because I know he wants to be out here as much as anybody. But I’m just hoping the surgery goes well and that he’s doing well. That’s all I can do, try to support him through this time.
