Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in a new Star Wars film directed by Shawn Levy. The untitled project is moving forward quickly after Gosling's interest pushed it ahead of other projects Levy was considering.
An upcoming Star Wars film that has been in development for some time is gaining significant momentum with the potential casting of renowned actor Ryan Gosling. The 44-year-old star is reportedly in negotiations to lead the untitled Star Wars project, which is being directed by Shawn Levy , known for his work on Deadpool and Wolverine.
Levy first came on board to direct and develop the film back in 2022, with Johnathan Tropper, the writer behind Levy's The Adam Project, joining the project to pen the script. While the project was initially put on hold while Levy focused on the final season of Stranger Things, it is now moving forward at a rapid pace. There are no details yet regarding the character Gosling might portray, whether it's an established figure within the Star Wars universe or a brand new creation. While the project is currently slated as a standalone film, there's always a possibility of connections to the vast Star Wars franchise. This news comes as a surprise to many, as just recently Levy was reportedly interested in a boy band film at Paramount, which would have reunited him with Deadpool and Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, Gosling's interest in the Star Wars project has propelled it to the forefront, making it highly likely to become the next Star Wars film to enter production. If Gosling's deal is finalized quickly, production could commence this fall, potentially leading to a 2027 release. This development comes roughly 12 years after Gosling was rumored, alongside Zac Efron, for a role in J.J. Abrams' 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, which is believed to have ultimately gone to Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. Tropper was announced as the screenwriter in July 2024, although it's been reported that he's been working on the script for over a year. Levy has mentioned that he aims to bring his signature style to the Star Wars universe. He emphasized that Lucasfilm president Kathy Kennedy wanted him to create a film that reflects his unique vision and taste. Levy expressed confidence in his ability to develop a compelling story within the Star Wars framework, drawing upon his experience working with Marvel on Deadpool and Wolverine as evidence that it's possible to maintain creative control while contributing to a larger universe. He's optimistic about this project and believes his instincts will guide the way, much like they did with Deadpool. Levy will produce the film through his 21 Laps production company, alongside Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy
