Ryan Reynolds admits taking 'etiquette lessons' before meeting King Charles in Wrexham
Ryan Reynolds might be used to mixing with Hollywood royalty, but it was a whole different ballgame when he met King Charles and Camilla Queen Consort in Wrexham. The Deadpool star has told of how he took "etiquette lessons" prior to his meeting with the King of England, to ensure his manner was exactly as should be.
Last Friday, King Charles and his wife of 17 years, Camilla, were visiting the Wrexham Association Football Club in Wales that is co-owned by Ryan and fellow actor Rob McElhenny after they purchased it in 2020. The meeting between the monarch and the actors came just one day after the release of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's new Netflix documentary, and Ryan and Rob were sure not to mention a word about it to King Charles and Camilla. When asked by the media prior to the meeting if they would be mentioning it, both actors joked and pretended they had never heard of Harry and Meghan's documentary."As a Canadian, and I’m sure Rob will speak as an American, we are not steeped in the culture as one would be growing up in the UK." Ryan revealed that he was "impossibly excited" to meet King Charles and Camilla, and that he and Rob had taken etiquette lessons in anticipation. He said: "Rob and I both said early on, and this holds true for the rest of our lives, we will do anything to uplift this community and this club and having the King pay a visit is certainly one way to do it, that’s for sure." Ryan and Rob purchased Wrexham Football Club back in 2020, but only got full control of it in February 2021, and Ryan's wife Blake Lively - who is currently pregnant with their fourth child - wasn't keen on the idea at first. Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, to discuss the series with guest host McElhenney, Reynolds said: "I remember after you contacted about this absolutely crazy idea and I remember seeing Blake, saying, ‘I have bad news and I have really bad news. The bad news is I slipped into someone’s DM. The really bad news is that I could have bought half of a fifth tier national football league in Wales". Ryan and Rob made a documentary about their purchase of the club, which details how Rob initiated the partnership and that Ryan didn't know much about English football before falling in love with the game. Ryan said: "I was so into this endeavour as a zoomed out macro project that involved a club, a business and a community and how those intersect. "I didn't expect to take the red pill, with respect to Wrexham, and go down that rabbit-hole to understand their DNA and their passion and love for this club. It transcends wins and losses. I don't think I ever really understand football, but that Stockport match, now I feel it in my bones."
