In a surprising twist, Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds and NFL legend Tom Brady are set to face off as their respective clubs, Wrexham and Birmingham City, meet in a Monday night League One match. Both clubs have been fueled by significant North American investment, leading to a competitive spending spree in the lower division.
You wouldn't ever envisage a League One clash on a Monday night in Birmingham bringing two A-listers head-to-head like this. But that's exactly what's happening. Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds is in the red corner for Wrexham and NFL great Tom Brady is in the Birmingham blue. Both clubs have been backed by North American investment with Reynolds taking over the Welsh side in 2021 alongside producer Rob McElhenney and Brady coming on board as a Blues minority stakeholder last summer.
The similarities for the two clubs don't end there, according to football finance expert and co-host of the Price of Football podcast Kieran Maguire. “We’ve not seen spending like this in League One, it’s blitzed the previous history,” Maguire said of Birmingham's recent transfer market splurge. “But there are similarities in the way Wrexham used the money of their owners to accelerate their way out of National League and League Two, where you can buy your way out of the divisions.
