A Ryanair passenger was recently charged €60 (£50) for taking a 750ml water bottle on board. The passenger, Ruby Flanagan, explained that despite her backpack initially fitting within size restrictions, she was charged the fee when staff insisted the water bottle be placed inside the bag.
A recent Ryanair passenger, Ruby Flanagan, shared her experience of being charged a €60 (£50) excess baggage fee at Dublin Airport for carrying a 750ml water bottle . Flanagan explained in the Mirror that she had her water bottle strapped to her body and demonstrated that her backpack fit within the airline's size restrictions at the bag-sizer. However, staff insisted the bottle had to be placed inside the bag, resulting in a tight fit and a 'giant growth-like lump' on her backpack.
She was then told that the bag was now 'too big' and the fee applied. When she questioned why she couldn't carry the bottle in her hand, she was informed it would be considered a 'second bag'. Flanagan pleaded that she had carried the water bottle separately on her inbound flight, but her appeal was unsuccessful. She ultimately paid the fee and received the 'yellow sticker of shame' placed on her backpack. Flanagan expressed feeling 'shaken and confused' by the situation. Ryanair's baggage policy allows passengers one small item of carry-on baggage, up to 40cm x 20cm x 25cm, to fit under the seat in front of them. At the gate, passengers may be asked to place their bag in one of Ryanair's bag-sizers to ensure it meets the size requirements. Ryanair states that their bag-sizers measure 42cm x 20cm x 30cm. If a passenger's bag doesn't fit, it will be tagged and placed in the aircraft hold, subject to the payment of a gate bag fee. As the airline states that each passenger can only bring 'one small item' onboard, the gate staff likely considered the water bottle a separate item. Passengers who require more than an under-seat bag can purchase Ryanair's 'priority and two cabin bags' option, allowing them to bring a 10kg bag (up to 55cm x 40cm x 20cm) to be stored in the overhead locker, along with an under-seat bag. Prices for this package vary and are significantly cheaper when purchased at the time of booking. Checked baggage can also be purchased with either a 10kg or 20kg weight limit. Over the years, many Ryanair passengers have faced similar situations with the airline's strict baggage regulations. Cases have involved passengers being charged for protruding suitcase wheels, oversized bags, and even musical instruments deemed too large for carry-on
