In June, a Bexar County jury convicted Noel Fidencio Villarreal of murder for the slaying of Ruben Martinez in 2022 at the Oyo Hotel.

Noel Fidencio Villarreal was sentenced to 60 years in prison for killing a man he said was about to carjack him. In June, a Bexar County jury convicted Villarreal, 44, of murder for the slaying of Ruben Martinez , 32, on Dec. 22, 2022, at the Oyo Hotel San Antonio Lackland , which is near Sea World on SW Loop 410. Instead of allowing the jury to impose his punishment, Villarreal chose to be sentenced by state District Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl , who heard the guilt-innocence phase of the trial.

Smith, told the court his client has had a tough life filled with challenges, such as poverty, abandonment, trying to fit in, gang activity, substance abuse since he was 11 years old, and the violent death of his father when he was a child. Smith said combined all led Villarreal to a life of crime that has spanned 30 years. Smith's only witness was Villarreal, who began to apologize to Martinez's family, but then his testimony devolved into blaming the man he killed.
