The former Parklife and Warehouse Project boss has raised concerns over plans to ban smoking in some outdoor spaces
Sacha Lord has urged the government to 'stave off' speculation over its plans to ban smoking in beer gardens.
Mr Lord, who is Greater Manchester's Night Time Economy Adviser, responded to reports of the new smoking ban on social media this morning . Posting on X, formerly Twitter, he said he would support measures focusing on areas where children are present. Smoking is already banned in outdoor seating at some cafes, bars and restaurants in Manchester. Since 2021, licences handed to food and drink outlets seeking permission to put tables and chairs on pavements outside their businesses have included a no-smoking rule.
Last year, Manchester's newest park announced that cigarettes, cigars and vaping would be banned. The move, announced on World No Tobacco Day, means smoking has been banned in Mayfield Park - which is partly owned by private companies - since June 2023. Smoking is a major risk factor for cancer, heart disease, stroke, and respiratory diseases. But non-smokers that are exposed to second-hand smoke - also known as passive smoking - are also at risk of the same illnesses, especially vulnerable adults, children, and babies.
