Teaching all staff about cybersecurity is crucial , experts say. But what do you do with staff who refuse to learn?

Phishing and email-based malware attacks are such a big threat to organisations that companies should consider sacking staff who repeatedly click on suspicious emails, a senior executive at a wealth and financial advice company says.

But sacking staff for clicking on phishing emails “doesn’t happen overnight. It’s multiple failures”. “So, everyone in our company will get one simulated phishing for my team every month. If you click on that, congratulations, you get two a month,” he said. Jonathan Rubinsztein, the CEO of the investigation software company Nuix, said humans can be the biggest risk in an organisation, regardless of whether their intentions are good or malicious.

Having everyone interested in cybersecurity would be better than having more cybersecurity experts, says James Turner, founder of CISO Lens.“It’s a cliche, agrees with it, but no one’s behaving like it’s the truth: security is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
