Former Premier League referee, Mike Coote, explains that he used cocaine to cope with the pressures of concealing his sexuality and the demanding nature of his job. Coote, who was sacked following leaked videos of him making abusive comments about Jurgen Klopp and snorting white powder, says he hid his emotions and sexuality during his career, which ultimately led to his struggles.
Coote was sacked as a referee last month following leaked videos of him making abusive comments about Jurgen Klopp and snorting white powderhas said he took cocaine to help deal with the pressures of hiding his sexuality and being an elite official.The 42-year-old has said the partial cause for this behaviour was attempting to cover up the fact he is gay.
“My sexuality isn’t the only reason that led me to be in that position. But I’m not telling an authentic story if I don’t say that I’m gay, and that I’ve had real struggles dealing with hiding that. Coote also explained how he believed coming out while still refereeing would only worsen the abuse he received in the “macho world” of football.
“There’s a lot to be done throughout football and more widely in society with regard to discrimination. I didn’t want to be that person that was putting their head above the parapet to be shot at, given the abuse we all get as a referee in any event.”
