The Hyson Green pub stood in Radford Road for over 100 years

An iconic Nottingham pub statue that hasn't been seen for years has been rediscovered - rotting away in a charity shop's backyard. The 'Old General' stood over the door of the Hyson Green pub of the same name for more than a century.

A man working there said: "It's been here years, It's a rubbish statue, there's no detail to it. It was only the painting that made it look any good. It was very disappointing when they lowered it down on the crane. It's just a piece of concrete rubbish. If anyone wants it they can have it I'm sure but it will cost about £500 for a crane to take it away.

Steve Westby, chairman of the Nottingham branch of the Campaign for Real Ale , described the statue as iconic and unique to the area. He said: "Everybody knew it as a local landmark. The Old General was immortalised in stone, wearing a yellow waistcoat, a red jacket and grey breeches, and displayed above the main entrance. Every Christmas for over a century he was dressed up as Santa Claus.
