'Dad was funny, witty, caring and kind'
Derek Morris, from Accrington, passed away on October 26 at the age of 90 from lung cancer, which he was diagnosed with in August this year. The father-of-two joined the Royal Navy after he left Rhyddings School in Oswaldtwistle at the age of 17.
Derek played football for the Royal Navy and after returning home he played for Foxhill in Oswaldtwistle and Clayton Mount Pleasant. His brother, Jack, and his brother-in-law, Micheal Disney, also joined the Royal Navy while Derek’s brother, Donald, joined the Army. Derek then lived in Oswaldtwistle from the age of eight. Derek and Margaret met during a Saturday night dance in Accrington in 1959.
He distributed poppies to schools, pubs and businesses in Oswaldtwistle for Church and Oswaldtwistle Royal British Legion for nearly 10 years and he always took part in the Remembrance Sunday parade in Oswaldtwistle.
