Sadio Mane was incredibly close to joining Manchester United before he embarked on an illustrious career at Anfield. The Senegalese forward initially honed his skills in the Premier League while playing for Southampton, where his 2015 outing against Aston Villa saw him achieve the fastest-ever hat-trick in the English top flight at just two minutes and 56 seconds – putting him firmly on the radar of many elite clubs.
As one of the hottest properties in the 2016 transfer market, Mane was in high demand and ultimately had to decide between multiple suitors vying for his signature. Of course, it was Liverpool where the now 32-year-old chose to base himself next, becoming an integral part of the Reds' fearsome frontline alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. Under the stewardship of ex-boss Jurgen Klopp, the goal-machine claimed numerous titles, including the coveted Champions League and Premier League crowns. But in a past interview, Mane disclosed that his career could have taken an alternate route and seen him move to Old Trafford instead. He said in 2019: 'I was really, really close because I even met up with them. So I was coming, I was there, and I spoke with the boss who was there before. They made an offer, but in the same week, Klopp called me. He said: 'I think it's the right club. The right coach for you, and I think it's better that you go to Liverpool'. For me I think it was the right time as well. I said, 'I am going to Liverpool'.'
